English Department Students Showcase Public Speaking Skills at the English Conference of Universitas Riau

On Thursday, June 20, 2024, English Department students of Universitas Riau successfully held the English Student Conference as the final project in the Public Speaking course. Taking place at Universitas Riau, this activity aims to improve the quality of students in communicating in public. This event was organized by Class 6A of the English Education Study Program, Class of 2021.

The chairman of the committee, Tito Castro Siagian, said that the theme of the event was "English for Global Communication: Preparing Learners for the 21st Century." Tito explained, "This theme was taken because we want to prepare students to be able to communicate effectively in the era of globalization. Good English language skills are very important in the world of education and work, especially in facing the challenges of the 21st century."
The event was opened by Public Speaking lecturer, Dr. Afrianto Daud, S.Pd, M.Ed. In his speech, Dr. Afrianto stated, "The conference theme is a good choice. In the 21st century, there the term 4 C. 4 skills we must enhance, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Critical Thinking."

The series of events consisted of Plenary Session and Parallel Session. The Plenary Session was filled by an outstanding speaker, Dr. Afrianto Daud, S.Pd., M.Ed. In the Parallel Session, students took turns delivering their presentations, sharing their knowledge and opinions on a predetermined theme.
The event was held in three different rooms at Riau University, D4 as the Main Hall, D7 as Room 2, and D8 as Room 3. Each room had a series of interesting presentation and discussion sessions, where students could share their knowledge and experience.

The English Student Conference shows a strong commitment to improving students' communication skills. It is hoped that this activity can improve students' ability to speak and as a place to continue to hone their skills to be ready to face global challenges in the future.
